74% indicated the food & bev they consume impacts their mental well-being
American consumers are increasingly aware of the connection between diet and mental well-being. According to a recent International Food Information Council survey, 74% recognize that the food and beverages they consume impact their mental health—35% moderately and 39% significantly. However, stress often disrupts healthier eating habits, with 60% of respondents feeling somewhat or very stressed, leading 51% to make poorer food choices.
This relationship works both ways: 61% say their mental and emotional state directly influences what they eat. Despite this awareness, healthfulness remains only the third most important factor in food decisions, trailing behind taste and price. With convenience gaining importance, it may soon surpass health as a key driver.
Compounding the issue, while 61% actively try to avoid processed foods, 54% know little about government nutrition guidelines, and 68% have encountered misleading health information on social media. This widespread confusion and lack of clear guidance present one of the biggest barriers to mindful, healthier eating.
